OM collects nearly 70,000 guilders from prisoners to pay victims

May 17, 2023  –WILLEMSTAD – Last year, the Public Prosecution collected nearly 70,000 guilders in compensation from convicted individuals. This amount is intended for payment to victims, according to the annual report of the Public Prosecution. 

Innovative methods were employed to promote the collection of these funds, such as sending reminders and entering into payment arrangements with convicted individuals in the SDKK prison. Between September 1st and December 31st, 2022, payment arrangements were made with 26 inmates in the SDKK prison. 

Collection 

When the court imposes a restitution order, compensation must be paid to the victim or the injured party. The Public Prosecution is responsible for collecting the amount from the convicted individual on behalf of the victim. 

Approximately 20,000 guilders have been allocated from government funds as an advance payment for all victims entitled to compensation. This amount is only sufficient for five to eight victims per year, while the number of individuals entitled to compensation is increasing. More than 25 times compared to last year.
