Investigation into medication rates expected to lead to an increase in prescription line fee in six months

November 29, 2023  –WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Health Authority in formation will initiate an investigation to determine pharmacy rates. This decision emerged from a joint consultation between the pharmacy association VAE and the Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature. The goal is to have it completed within six months.

Pharmacists are seeking an increase in the prescription line fee from seven to ten guilders. The old rates have not been adjusted since 2001.

The consultation was mandated by the court, which demanded that the parties discuss the prescription line fee’s amount, the duration of the rate investigation, and the possibility of temporarily raising the prescription line fee.

The latter will not happen, much to the disappointment of pharmacists, who claim to have an immediate problem meeting the financial obligation to keep the pharmacy open between 08:00 and 19:00.

Both parties have agreed to meet every two weeks, allowing the temporary increase in the prescription line fee to be addressed later.

The promised investigation will last four to six months and will be carried out by an independent organization yet to be hired. The results will be presented to the pharmacists for feedback and discussion.
