Immigration officer charged in connection with migrant smuggling near BVI

April 21, 2023  -An immigration officer has been arrested and charged following a recent migrant smuggling incident near the British Virgin Islands.

Officer Naima Grante was charged with three counts of breach of trust, according to the Department of Immigration.

Following the arrest of three individuals from the Dominican Republic who were trying to enter the country illegally, authorities launched an investigation into Grante’s suspected offenses.

In a statement, the Department said it is committed to upholding the law, adding that any identified wrongdoings by officers will be addressed.

“We also wish to acknowledge the technical support and assistance that was extended by His Majesty’s Customs and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force regarding this matter,” it continued.

It further said that it remains committed to enhancing internal monitoring processes by utilizing advanced technological software, employing relevant investigative strategies, and maintaining strong relationships with regional partners.
